Five minutes each week that could change your leadership and business forever.

LATEST EPISODE

My latest interview is with Patrick McDermott, founder of DigiTally, a business that helps retail and hospitality businesses reduce waste and increase margins through digital stock-taking services. Patrick believes that the food waste problem in developed parts of the world is a serious issue and that it is time for the industry to take responsibility.

This interview you will get insight into how to address food waste through digitising your inventory management, and how you can get your people to engage in solving one of the biggest challenges we have when on the planet - food waste!

TED TALK

video preview

I'm a huge fan of the late Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's also known to many as the β€œfather of flow”. Recently I discovered this TED Talk where he explores the question: "What makes a life worth living?". It made me reflect if I got this right - and I'm sure his insight and wisdom will improve your life.

THE MINI-UNIVERSITY

Aristotle said: β€œWe are what we repeatedly do. Therefore excellence is not an act but habit.”

Habits are both what we do and the thought that dominates our thinking.

Habits can be good for us or bad.

They grow compared to the action and intent we put behind them.

If we want to be a runner, we need to run several times every week.

If we want to be a writer, we have to write daily.

So reflect on the habits you have lived by this week.

Are they supporting the kind of person you want to become?

If not, take these reflections into your new week and start living the habits you know will make you the person you want to become.

SUPERMARKET REBELS HISBE ARE FUNDRAISING

These Mavericks need to reach Β£75k in 11 days, to unlock another Β£25k in match-funding.

The world needs alternatives to Tesco’s and the like… and this year HISBE celebrates ten years of fighting for a sustainable future for food and farming.

HISBE stands for How It Should Be. They are not a health food shop. They are not an exclusively vegan or vegetarian food shop. They are a regular supermarket – operating how it should be. And they want to transform the food industry by challenging the way big supermarkets do business.

I know the people behind the organisation and the teams and they are all driven by a deep purpose to make the world a better place. They also were the first stockist for Pulse Kitchen in Brighton and have been instrumental to our journey into retail.

So if you can, please help them reach their Crowdfunder goal of 75k.

Hospitality Mavericks

by Michael Tingsager

We wanted to show there was another way to build and lead businesses. So Hospitality Mavericks was born. We wanted to gather together the world’s Mavericks who do things differently from the norm. They are leaders from all walks of life who have shown and proven that there is a better way forward without cashing out on their values; ripping off their people, community and planet. That was over ten years ago. Since then we've worked with and interviewed more than 200 leaders, thinkers and experts on the best way to build a business that makes a positive impact on all stakeholders. We are the home to impactful leaders that KNOW and DO things in a better way. A network for those seeking a different path. So don’t just be like the others! Dare to Be Different ✊

Wise selfishness vs foolish selfishness.Last week, I was captivated by a Netflix documentary featuring the late Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama titled "Joy." Here, they discuss how to find joy and happiness during troubled times. At some point in the interview, they discuss the need to care for yourself without hurting others. They state that you must take care of yourself, or you can not survive or be helpful to others. But caring for oneself should not hurt others. The Daila Lama brings up...

The Power of Positive Energy.None of us can expect to get through life and work without obstacles. Life and work do not always go our way.But that does not mean you can’t navigate it better. You need more POSITIVE ENERGY.In my work observing what Maverick leaders KNOW and DO, I have found that they see positive energy as THE fuel for driving themselves and their organisation to greatness. When I talk about positive energy, I do not think about the rah-rah kind. I think about:- Optimism.-...
