Thriving by doing one thing wellโ€ฆ

Most founders started the business because it should be great fun, and they had a dream.

Often, that dream turns into a huge struggle and sometimes a nightmare.

One reason for this is often that we spread ourselves.

Trying to make the business be everything for everyone means:

- A lack of clarity.

- Which means more busy and unfocused work.

- Which means more uncertainty and stress for the team.

- Which means a lack of profitability and fun.

โ€‹David Hieatt talks about it as a critical cornerstone for a great life and business is to: โ€œDo One Thing Well.

What does โ€œDo One Thing Wellโ€ really mean?

Iโ€™m sure you have exspirience it when you engage with a business that masters this:

โœ”๏ธ They have products, services, or experiences that are just right and make you feel good when you purchase it.

โœ”๏ธ They have worked to master the craft of making their thing so simple, beautiful and useful.

โœ”๏ธ Somehow, they combine the right amount of innovation, design, and respect for the one thing's impact on all its stakeholders to make it truly unique.

I came to think about this as I was scrolling through my pictures on my phone one day.

I found a picture of a pizza place I visited in Naples some years ago.

They do fried pizza really well.

The pizza was incredible, and the experience blew my mind.

They had been in business for decades by focusing on โ€œDoing One Thing Wellโ€.

โ€œDo One Thing Wellโ€ is a key trait for many of the great Mavericks I have interviewed over the year on the Hospitality Maverick podcast show.

I try to practice this in life and business.

Itโ€™s hard - but the best way.

How are you focusing on โ€œDoing One Thing Wellโ€ in your work?

This was a LinkedIn post I wrote recently - there were some remarkable reflections from other Mavericks - find it hereโ€‹

Hospitality Mavericks

by Michael Tingsager

We wanted to show there was another way to build and lead businesses. So Hospitality Mavericks was born. We wanted to gather together the worldโ€™s Mavericks who do things differently from the norm. They are leaders from all walks of life who have shown and proven that there is a better way forward without cashing out on their values; ripping off their people, community and planet. That was over ten years ago. Since then we've worked with and interviewed more than 200 leaders, thinkers and experts on the best way to build a business that makes a positive impact on all stakeholders. We are the home to impactful leaders that KNOW and DO things in a better way. A network for those seeking a different path. So donโ€™t just be like the others! Dare to Be Different โœŠ

Wise selfishness vs foolish selfishness.Last week, I was captivated by a Netflix documentary featuring the late Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama titled "Joy." Here, they discuss how to find joy and happiness during troubled times. At some point in the interview, they discuss the need to care for yourself without hurting others. They state that you must take care of yourself, or you can not survive or be helpful to others. But caring for oneself should not hurt others. The Daila Lama brings up...

The Power of Positive Energy.None of us can expect to get through life and work without obstacles. Life and work do not always go our way.But that does not mean you canโ€™t navigate it better. You need more POSITIVE ENERGY.In my work observing what Maverick leaders KNOW and DO, I have found that they see positive energy as THE fuel for driving themselves and their organisation to greatness. When I talk about positive energy, I do not think about the rah-rah kind. I think about:- Optimism.-...
